Why did you choose to become a financial advisor?
I didn’t choose to become a financial advisor until later in life. My wife was working at a wealth management firm, and it really interested me, but I was already working at a financial software company. It was until years later that my company was acquired; at which time I decided to change careers. I’ve always been passionate about investing and figuring out ways to optimize my money. When I was in college, I studied finance, and I took an investment class where we started out with a fictious $500K and had to build a strategy to invest the funds over the next quarter. The professor said if we were able to double the funds and outperform him, we would get a prize. Well, I was able to do just that and received an old railroad stock certificate and was hooked. I never thought I could make a hobby into an actual career, but that is exactly what I’m doing.
What’s a memory from your client interactions that’s stayed with you?
I remember finalizing a retirement date with one of my clients. They were stressed at work, but didn’t know how to leave the company, despite having enough money to retire. After we finally set an end date and conveyed it to their employer, it was a complete change. They went from being overwhelmed, with declining health related to stress, to having optimism for the future. It was just one of those moments that I was happy I could share with them.
Why are you excited to be part of MFA?
I’m excited to see all the growth within our company. We have been hiring a lot of people over the past year, which has been adding so much to our team. It is exciting to see where our team will be in the next 5 years.
You have 10 seconds to advise someone on how to stay financially healthy – go!
More money doesn’t equate to more spending. People can fall into the trap of increasing their lifestyle (aka expenses) when advancing in their career. As a result, despite making more money, you find yourself feeling like you don’t have more money. Instead, invest a portion of that excess money and grow your wealth over time.
What’s something people might not know about you?
People might not know that I used to be a Division I athlete in college. I was a pole vaulter at Cal Poly, which I won my conference championship and was a West Regional Qualifier. I also used to coach track and field for 12 years at a local high school.
